The tide of globalization makes it essential for everybody riding the tide to pick up a second, or even a third, language. The advancement of information and communication technology is partly responsible for bringing the tide and it also changes the way a second language can be acquired. This forum invites learners and will-be-learners, experts and nonexperts, to present and discuss views on how is best to learn a second language in the 21st century and beyond.

Language=motor skill
Learning a second language also means acquiring a new motor skill, which consists of not only action but also perception. Perception and action mutually support each other in the development of the skill. Observation and imitation play an important learning role here; so do motor imagery and mental practice.

Dear Prof. Chen,
ReplyDeleteCan language be acquired as a motor skill? I believe that mental practice can be a powerful way to learn a lot of skills. For example, mental practice in sports, music, and more. When talking about second language acquisition, perhaps speech performance can be taken as a skill and may be effectively developed by doing mental rehearsal of speech performances.
Cheers to our new blog! haha!
Dear Prof. Chen,
ReplyDeletewhen I was learning Korean,
there were some similar sounds in Korean which I couldn't differentiate. When I watched Korean soap operas, I tried
to imitate and imagine how the actors spoke Korean.
I focused on those similar sounds. When I finished all the Korean soap operas I had, I thought I could do a better job of pronouncing and differentiating those sounds. As a result, it was in vain. I think the corrective feedback from language teachers is important to me.
